Mutable Body

In 2004, I received a Faculty Research Grant from IU South Bend that allowed me to produce a new sculpture installation titled “The Mutable Body” that I have shown twice in solo exhibitions, once at Western Michigan University and the other at IU South Bend.

The meaning of this body of work is about transformation. In other words the emotional, intellectual, and physical growth that continually takes place in a person’s lifetime. The gauze and the lumber that surround the body are the metaphorical and physical boundaries that contain and constrict the self, (social mores, preconceived notions, stereotypical ideas). These are amongst the boundaries we must overcome in order to change and free ourselves, and to develop our innate spiritual identity and potential.
